Street trading
Street trading refers to businesses or buskers that use footpath or nature strip space for advertising, displaying goods or for placing tables, chairs and accessories.
A-frame signboards
You need a permit to display an advertising signboard on Council property, including footpaths and road reserves.
Advertising signboard permits expire on 30 June and need to be renewed each year.
Displaying goods
To display goods on Council property you will need a permit. Your displaying goods permit expires on 30 June and needs to be renewed annually.
Tables and chairs
Before you set up alfresco tables and chairs on Council land, you need a permit.
Table and chairs permits expire on 30 June and need to be renewed each year.
When submitting an application please ensure that you include a map for placement of these items as well as a copy of public liability insurance indemnifying Council in the event of an incident involving your items.
Busking
Busking on Council land requires a permit. There is no fee for a busking permit.
To apply for a busking permit complete the General Council Land permit and provide details of the type of busking that you do.
Apply to trade on the street
To apply:
- complete a Street Trading Application form (download below)
- include a map for placement of these items for your stall
- provide a copy of public liability insurance with cover of minimum $10 million
- pay the relevant fee in person at any of our Customer and Library Service Centres; or
- request an invoice be emailed to you to make payment; or
- phone Council to make payment on 03 5734 6200.
Roadside trading
Roadside trading refers to vendors selling from a vehicle or stall on the side of the road, as opposed to from a shop or office environment. For example, coffee vans, ice cream vendors etc.
Apply to trade on the roadside
To apply:
- complete a Roadside Trading Application Form below
- include a map for placement of these items for your stall
- provide a copy of public liability insurance with cover of minimum $10 million
- pay the relevant fee in person at any of our Customer and Library Service Centres; or
- request an invoice be emailed to you to make payment.

Real estate advertising signs
If you wish to place a sign on Council land:
- complete a 2020 Real Estate Advertising Board Application Form below
- include a map for placement of these items for your stall
- supply a copy of public liability insurance with cover of minimum $10 million
- return your documents to any of our Customer and Library Service Centres and pay the relevant fees in person; or
- return your documents to Mitchell Shire Council and an officer will call you to take payment over the phone.
The permit will expire 1 month after the sale of the real estate or 12 months from issue of the permit whichever is first.
Community group fundraising
Local community groups can apply for a community fundraising permit to advertise an event or to set up a table and provide information on Council land:
- complete a Community Fundraising from Council Land Application form below
- provide a copy of your group’s public liability insurance with cover of minimum $10 million
- submit your application and insurance via email to mitchell@mitchellshire.vic.gov.au.
You must make sure your sign does not obscure the vision of motorists, and are installed safely. There is no permit fee for Local Community Groups.
