Plastic Free July

We're ditching single-use plastics and taking part in the Plastic Free July challenge to help our community to start avoiding these plastics.

Single-use plastics are certainly in the spotlight in 2021, with a number of Australian state governments announcing bans, and the release of the Federal National Plastics Plan.

The Victorian government announced that problematic single-use plastics will be banned across Victoria by February 2023.

Single-use straws, cutlery, plates, drink-stirrers, expanded polystyrene food and drink containers, and cotton bud sticks will be banned from sale or supply in Victoria by February 2023.

A survey of 1,638 Australians (Thinkfield Research September 2020) showed that 92% of people support policies and actions to reduce plastic waste.

Plastic Free July Challenge

This year Council is taking the Plastic Free July challenge to help the community to start avoiding single-use plastics.

To participate (for free), simply visit the PFJ Challenge website and choose to refuse a few single use plastics. Participants will have access to a variety of resources to help reduce plastic, including access to online workshops.

Here at Mitchell Shire Council, we are also in the process of updating our catering policy and public events guide to encourage event organisers to avoid plastic wherever possible.

If you have any questions about the Single Use Plastic ban, or Plastic Free July please contact Council’s Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Education officer Grace.Davis-Williams@mitchellshire.vic.gov.au
