Protecting our natural environment

Landcare and environment groups

There are several environmental community groups in Mitchell Shire committed to protecting and enhancing environmental resources.

Mitchell Shire is fortunate to have 11 local Landcare groups and at least 8 environmental/sustainability groups that work to protect and enhance our natural environment and care for our natural resources.

Landcare activities include weed and pest animal control, revegetation, erosion control, biodiversity enhancement and pasture improvement.

Some groups have equipment for hire such as spray units, direct seeding machines, Indian myna traps and seed collection tools.

Mitchell Shire Environment Advisory Committee

This advisory committee to Mitchell Shire Council consists of local community representatives, a local Councillor and Council officers.

Local Environmental Groups

Local community environmental groups may be committed to protecting and enhancing the environmental values of a particular area, such as Mount Piper, or providing a forum to learn about, discuss and advocate for positive environmental change.

Become a Landcare or environment group volunteer and you will have a positive effect on our local environment and gain local and practical land management knowledge. The groups often organise activities such as guest speakers, working bees, field days and workshops.
