Parenting support

First time parents group

Mitchell Shire Maternal and Child Health offer first-time parents an opportunity to come together through our 6-week program where they can:

  • share information
  • enhance parenting skills and knowledge
  • develop social networks

Your Maternal and Child Health Nurse will book you into your local group following the birth of your first child. Groups normally start when baby is around 3 months old.

If you are new to the area, as a first-time parent, please contact MCH Central Bookings on 03 5734 6253 during business hours (leave a message). Or you can email mchadmin@mitchellshire.vic.gov.au.

If you are not a first-time parent but are looking for activities to make friends and get to know people in the area, please speak to your Maternal and Child Health Nurse for information about other local activities and playgroups within your community.

Small talk supported playgroups

We run free, funded supported playgroups for preschool children for families who either:

  • hold a Health Care Card or type of concession card
  • identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • have children in kinship care

Supported playgroups offer families a safe place to play and interact with their children. It is an opportunity to meet other families and learn more about community groups that can support your children.

Our trained facilitator is there to offer support and strategies through the Smalltalk program offered during each session. Smalltalk strategies enhance everyday parenting opportunities, building positive interactions for improved learning and development in the home environment.

In-home program

The supported playgroup facilitator can also run an in-home program throughout the term for those that may need more one-on-one support in their parenting. These structured sessions operate during Victorian school terms.

For more information, call MCH Central Bookings on 03 5734 6253 during business hours (leave a message). Or you can email mchadmin@mitchellshire.vic.gov.au.
