Early start kindergarten

What is early start kindergarten?

Early Start Kindergarten (ESK) is a government funded grant that allows eligible 3 year old children 15 hours of free or low-cost kindergarten each week.

Is my child eligible?

ESK is available to children who are:

  • from a refugee or asylum seeker background, or
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, or
  • known to child protection.

Age requirements:

ESK is available to children who are at least 3 years old by 30 April in the year they are enrolled to attend.

4 year old children can also access free or low cost kindergarten the year before attending school through the ESK Extension Grant, regardless of whether they have accessed ESK in the previous year.

How to apply

You can confirm your eligibility by contacting a member of our Children Services department on 03 5734 6200.

If you know you are eligible, you can complete an online kindergarten application form and select yes for Early Start Kinder.
