Building and Renovating

The Building Department at Mitchell Shire Council is responsible for the administration of building control functions under various regulations and acts that ensure buildings meet relevant building and safety standards for owners, occupiers and the general public.

These include:

  • Issuing Building Permits and undertaking mandatory building inspections / enforcement associated with complaints and safety issues
  • Distribution of advisory building information
  • Inspection and reports regarding swimming pool fencing.

Building Permits are required for all:

  • new buildings
  • extensions
  • carports
  • garages
  • verandahs/decks
  • retaining walls
  • swimming pools

There are exceptions to these which must be discussed with the Building Department prior to any work being undertaken.

The Council provides a Building Permit Service for domestic and commercial building projects within the Mitchell Shire. Inspections must be booked 24 hours in advance.

Please contact the Building Department on (03) 5734 6200 to book an inspection. We also offer an Inspection Service for relocated dwellings.

A completed application form for a Building Permit, along with appropriate plans, a copy of title and appropriate fees must be returned to Council, for approval, prior to any building work being undertaken.
