Amend a building permit

Can I change plans after my building permit has been issued?

You can apply to vary a building permit at any time while the permit is active. Amendments might include changing the type of footing system, changing plans of the roofing, or increasing the span of a window.

Apply to amend a building permit:

Step 1

Prepare copies of the amended plans that have been coloured to show the extent of alterations proposed.

If returning the documents in-person, three copies will be required upon submission. If providing the plans via email, only one copy is required.

Step 2

Download and complete an Application to vary a Building Permit form.

Step 3

Return your documents to any of our Customer and Library Service Centres or the Wallan Planning and Building Services Office and pay the relevant fees in person; or email your documents to mitchell@mitchellshire.vic.gov.au and an officer will call you to take payment over the phone.

Applications can take up to 14 days to process.

Time extensions

You can apply for a time extension for your building permit before its expiration.

Building permits will expire if you:

  • have not had a first inspection within one year of the building permit being issued
  • if the building works have not been completed within the time period specified (usually 2 years for residential and 3 years for commercial projects).

Council will attempt to notify you if your building permit is coming up for expiry, so it is important that your contact details are kept up to date. Failure to extend your permit will lead to the permit expiring, and you will need to apply for a new building permit to continue works.

Update your details online.
