Planning and building

Building services

If you are thinking about building or renovating you need to talk to the Building Department at Mitchell Shire Council.

Our job is to make sure that buildings meet relevant building and safety standards for owners, occupiers and the general public. We do that by:

  • issuing building permits
  • undertaking mandatory building inspections/enforcement associated with complaints and safety issues
  • distributing advisory building information
  • inspecting swimming pool fencing.

Places of Public Entertainment

Events not organised by community groups, where a fee is charged for entry or that are fenced in or contained in a building, are likely to need a POPE permit. Contact us to check if you require a POPE permit.

Swimming pools safety barriers

Your building surveyor is responsible for assessing the safety of your swimming pool fence.

Your building work may impact Council assets such as easements. Demolition works may require our consent. Other work may require a planning permit. We need to check that proposed work protects passers-by and meets our planning guidelines, and give formal consent to proceed.
