History and Heritage

Wandong and Heathcote Junction are rich in heritage and a substantial part of Mitchell Shire's history. The township was designed by entrepreneur Robert Affleck Robertson who arrived in the town circa 1884 and built an extensive tramway network to Mt Disappointment. This was part of the boom of the timber industry, seasoning works and brickwork industry in the towns.

Today you can visit the historic Wandong Public Hall. The hall is located on the corner of Rail Street and Wandong Avenue. The hall was built from donated timber from the Australia Season Timber company in 1901 and officially opened in 1902. It was first known as the Wandong's Mechanics Institute and Free library. The hall celebrated its centenary in 2002.
