Workshop to finalise Tallarook hall plans

Designs for the new Tallarook Mechanics Institute hall will be finalised following a community workshop with the builder and architect on Saturday 12 January.

A community update meeting will also be held on Saturday 8 December ahead of the workshop to provide some information about next steps.

Owned by Mitchell Shire Council and operated by a Committee of Management, the historic hall burnt down in May. A community-led rebuilding committee has been working with Council and the Committee of Management on the rebuilding plans.

The hall will be rebuilt through Council’s insurance company who has engaged Bay Builders and Imparta Engineers for the project.

Discussions are underway to incorporate some modifications following community input earlier this year including:

  • capacity for a larger kitchen area;
  • some modifications to enable more flexibility for different uses such as a portable stage;
  • an area for change rooms for theatre productions; and
  • the introduction of bi-fold doors to improve access to the outdoor area.

In addition to this work, the rebuilding committee has also worked with Council to appoint Zen Architects to develop plans and design principles. The architect is funded through part of the $200,000 Victorian Government grant to assist with the rebuilding.

The architect’s drawings will then form the basis of detailed design plans for the builders.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Bill Chisholm said the committee had been working tirelessly behind the scenes to work through the different options available.

“The rebuilding committee has brought together a number of different views and technical guidance to help get to this point,” Cr Chisholm said.

“They’ve looked over the results of the community survey from earlier this year, they’ve met with the builder and the insurer and they’ve brought their own technical skills to the table.

“The architect will now bring all of that together to create a vision for the new hall which the builders and engineers will work to.”

Cr Chisholm thanked the community for their patience and encouraged them to sign up for updates.

“We understand not everyone will be around for the architect and builder workshop, but we didn’t want to delay things any further,” he said.

“Community members who can’t make the workshop will still be able to view the plans and share their thoughts online or in writing, but we’ll have a pretty tight turnaround to make sure we can get on with rebuilding sooner rather than later.”

The community update meeting will be held at 11am on Saturday 8 December at the Tallarook Hotel. The workshop with the architect and builder will be held at 11am on Saturday 12 January at the Tallarook Hotel. All welcome.
