Three new playspaces for Wallan officially opened
Three playspaces were officially opened by Victorian Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek on Coffey Drive, Lisa Place and Roulston Way in Wallan on Thursday (4 April).
A new playspace was built on Coffey Drive, while the other two sites received upgrades in a bid to encourage active, happy lifestyles for some of the Mitchell Shire’s youngest residents.
The $300,000 Connecting Wallan Neighbourhoods Project has been funded through a $225,000 grant from the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs Fund and a $75,000 allocation from Council.
As the population through Wallan continues to grow, the playspaces were a key priority of both Mitchell Shire and state government to incorporate outdoors play and foster social connections in new and growing residential areas.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Bill Chisholm said the councillors were pleased to see the new playspaces open for residents in Wallan.
“We are pleased to see the playspaces go into our communities as they are a brilliant setting for people to maintain healthy, active lifestyles,” he said.
“They are more than just playgrounds. People are able to socialise with others while children learn how to adapt to different situations, boosting physical, social and problem-solving skills.
“Thanks to the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, we are able to deliver this important infrastructure in our growing communities and refresh ageing playgrounds in our established communities.”
The design for each play space was finalised following community consultation in 2018.
Mitchell Shire Council reminds all residents to remain vigilant and safe while using public playspaces.
Adult supervision is always required, while any damage to the playspaces or dangerous wildlife sightings should be immediately reported.
Mitchell Shire Council would like to thank the state government for this important investment into our community.
