Three new play spaces for Wallan
Residents of Wallan will be more connected and active with a new play space at Coffey Drive underway as well as upgrades to play spaces in Roulston Way and Lisa Place planned for early next year.
The $300,000 for the three projects has been funded through a $225,000 grant from the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs Fund and a $75,000 allocation from Council.
A sod turn was held at the Coffey Drive site on Tuesday 30 October with works expected to be completed in December. Works at Lisa Place and Roulston Way are expected to be completed in February 2019.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Rhonda Sanderson said the play areas would become a real meeting place and health hub for people of all ages.
“Neighbourhood playgrounds are such a good way to encourage active, healthy and well-connected communities,” Cr Sanderson said.
“They are about so much more than just playing and being active. Children get to learn and develop all sorts of new physical, social, memory and problem-solving skills.
“The local playground is also a great way to encourage people of all ages to get together and get to know each other in both new and established communities.”
Cr Sanderson said having access to a good playground was a key to supporting liveable communities and building community pride.
“We know people live here or move here because they love the lifestyle and the sense of community that we are so lucky to enjoy,” she said.
“Thanks to the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund we are able to deliver this important infrastructure in our growing communities and refresh ageing playgrounds in our established communities.
“This is all part of what makes Mitchell a great place to live, work or do business and we are very grateful for the support from our funding partners and our local MPs Jaclyn Symes and Danielle Green to help secure this grant. “
The design for each play space was finalised following community consultation earlier in the year. Works at Coffey Drive include a new play space with some nature play elements, landscaping and tree plantings. Roulston Way and Lisa Place works both include play space upgrades with nature play elements along with tree plantings and landscaping works.
