Seymour Structure Plan adopted

Mitchell Shire Council has adopted the Seymour Structure Plan, a visionary and practical document that will help guide and shape the future direction of the town.

The plan outlines future planning and development opportunities for Seymour, while retaining its heritage and character, and was adopted at Monday night’s council meeting.

The plan anticipates Seymour at 22,000 people and provides a blueprint of how to achieve that growth.

It identifies eight key components that aid in ensuring a great quality of life for current and future residents: Character and Identity, Activity Centres, Employment and Economic Development, Residential Development, Natural Environment and Landscapes, Community Facilities and Open Space, Movement and Access, and Services and Utilities.

Some of the major projects identified within the plan include:

  • Developing a town centre master plan and urban design framework
  • Developing a riverfront/Emily Street master plan and urban design framework
  • Examining the industrial precinct along Delatite Road and identifying opportunities for renewal
  • Developing a master plan for Chittick Park
  • Advocating for a master plan for Seymour Railway Station precinct

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the plan sets out a clear vision for the future direction of Seymour and identified a range of investment-ready projects for the town.

“Seymour is a really fantastic, vibrant community with many great qualities that present opportunities for the town,” Cr Sanderson said.

“It is a unique town and has many advantages compared to any other towns nearby, particularly in terms of its infrastructure and access.

“Over the next 20 years, Seymour has the potential to position itself as a major regional centre, which will provide many benefits to our residents, businesses and visitors to the region.

“The Seymour Structure Plan will help us attract new jobs to the town, it will encourage residential and commercial growth, it will help grow services and it provides council with a really solid platform to advocate for external funding opportunities.

“It’s important to remember the structure plan does not affect landowners’ current use of their properties however, it may present many new opportunities should residents ever wish to consider their options in the future.”

Cr Sanderson thanked the community for their participation in developing the structure plan.

“As with all structure plans, it has been a long process to get to this stage and I would like to thank the hundreds of community members who have engaged with Council along the way and have provided their thoughts, expertise and knowledge, which has helped form this plan,” Cr Sanderson said.

“I would especially like to thank the 12 dedicated people on the Community Liaison Group who have been involved with the project for its entirety and have been such valuable conduits between Council and the wider community.”

To begin implementing the Seymour Structure Plan, Council will now start the process of a Planning Scheme Amendment to adopt the structure plan into the Mitchell Planning Scheme.

In the meantime, the structure plan will be used by Council to guide decision making.
