Roads program pushes ahead

More than 30 local roads are scheduled to get a facelift as part of Mitchell Shire Council’s ongoing road renewal program.

Contractors are a pushing ahead with works to maintain and service 700km of sealed roads and 714km of unsealed roads managed by Council.

This annual program of works involves resheeting, resealing, overlaying and rehabilitation of roads to ensure they remain safe and serviceable across the Shire.

Roads, bridges, footpaths and drainage were allocated $15.4 million in Council’s 2021/22 budget through the operating and capital programs.

The $4.4 million Sealed Road Renewal Program is jointly funded by Council and $3.169 million from the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Grant Program and the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).

Council’s sealing contractor will utilise a recycled material additive in many locations known as crumbed rubber, which is made from recycled automotive and truck tyres.

More than 8km of Broadford-Wandong Road, between Spur Road and Epping Kilmore Road, will be patched and resealed as part of the works. As will 6.4km of O’Grady’s Road, Kilmore East between Bakers Road and Epping-Kilmore Road.

The Unsealed Road Renewal Program is also in full swing, with $200,000 from Council and $614,000 from the LRCI allocated in Council’s 2021/22 budget.

The unsealed renewal program will see resheeting of almost 5km of Gerard Road, Sugarloaf Creek, 5km of Old Sydney Road, Wallan and 3.1km of Horans Track, Reedy Creek.

Please be aware there will be minor traffic delays at the below locations when works are underway with traffic management in place.

Council reminds drivers to follow traffic instructions for their safety and the safety of road workers.

If you would like to inform Council of a road you think should be part of this program, please report it below.

Comments from Cr Bill Chisholm

“The upkeep of local roads is an important part of Council’s role and it’s something we regularly hear about from the community,” he said.

“It’s a big job and something we’re always aiming to improve our service delivery on."

“We’re listening to the community about what roads need attention and have continued to push ahead despite the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I encourage the community to keep telling us what roads need attention via the Council website.”
