Residents encouraged to recycle as normal

Mitchell Shire Council is reassuring its residents that recyclable materials placed in their recycling bins will not go to landfill and the collection and processing of recycling will continue as normal.

There has been significant media coverage following a notice issued by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), ordering the SKM Material Recycling Facilities in Coolaroo and Laverton to stop receiving recycling material until further notice.

Mitchell Shire Council does not currently rely on either of these facilities to sort and process recycling materials, and council’s waste collection contractor, Visy, will continue to collect and deliver recycling materials for processing.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a notice ordering the SKM Material Recycling Facilities in Coolaroo and Laverton to stop receiving recycling material until further notice. While this is unfortunate, inappropriately managed stockpiles of waste and recyclable materials pose a fire risk and a risk to human health. The EPA’s priority is to protect the health and safety of the community.
