Learn about sustainability and being resilient at author talk in Seymour
Have you ever wanted to live cleaner or smarter? Perhaps grow your own produce, try permaculture or even go completely off the grid?
A more sustainable and resilient way of living will be explored when leading ecological thinker David Holmgren comes to Seymour Library next month.
Holmgren, a co-originator of the permaculture concept, will speak about his recently-launched book, RetroSuburbia: the downshifter’s guide to a resilient future, which was designed and distributed by Seymour local Richard Telford.
Holmgren said the book explained how Australians could downshift and retrofit their homes, gardens and local communities to be more self-organised, sustainable and resilient.
“Australians have been living in a dream world with cheap energy, low interest rates and a benign climate, but there are ominous signs of a weather change on multiple fronts,” Holmgren said.
“RetroSuburbia describes the patterns of retrofitting the house, garden and household to make for a better way of life now and build resilience for an uncertain future.
“My book balances the larger world context with local practical and creative solutions to help people plan and work towards a more resilient future.”
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the author talk would be a great chance for the community to gain valuable insights into living more sustainably.
“One of the priorities of our Council Plan is caring for the environment, which includes practising and advocating for a more sustainable way of living,” Cr Sanderson said.
“Some of the ways we encourage this is by increasing the level of community participation and education in the management of the natural environment and by integrating innovative and sustainable practises into our operations to reduce energy and water usage and costs.
“If you’re interested in the environment and how you can do your part to in living more sustainably, I’d encourage you to attend.”
