Discover Wallan and Kilmore with Kids
|Duration||Best time to visit|
Trust Mitchell to be the perfect day out for the kids – it is just an hour away from Melbourne with a smooth journey out, it is full of parks and walks for the kids to enjoy, and most of our restaurants and cafes offer kid-friendly menus! Consider Wallan and Kilmore for your next day out with your little ones.
Hop into your car and drive over to Wallan, one of Mitchell’s closest towns to Melbourne. Remember to to spot the wildlife along the way – there are heaps of birds, wallabies, wombats, kangaroos and one of the kiddie-favourites – cows! Once in Wallan, head over to one of the beautiful country cafes and stock up for the day. Cafe Vento, Pretty Sally Bakehouse and Open House Café have incredible coffee and kids’ meals and milkshakes.
Only a short walk through the town center is the Community Bank® Adventure Playground, which is located within Hadfield Park, Wallan. The playground has a five-storey tower and three slides. The playground also has a splash park for the kids to cool down, with water running all summer (It’s on now, by the way!) With change room facilities and barbecue tables ready to go, this one is likely to take up all day. Planning the trip with care will ensure the best time for parents and the kids!
After a power-packed afternoon, pack up your picnic and drive over to Kilmore. Pre-planning your trip for a great night’s stay is essential and the Fox On The Run Motel does not disappoint. Located on Sydney Street near the town centre, you have the option of leaving your car at your front door and venture out on foot. With ample options to shop and dine at, spending a relaxed evening with the kiddies will be a piece of cake, literally. Check out Kilmore Trackside for their dinner menu. For mum and dad, the wine offerings will help reconstitute once the kids are in bed!
The next morning, launch your expedition from the beginning of Sydney Street. Kilmore is a walker’s dream: compact, picturesque and brimming with historic charm. First on the right, you will be greeted by the Kilmore Court House. Walk along Sydney Street and spot key historic buildings like the Kilmore Townhall, the Kilmore Clock, and the Old Post Office. Read about their history on the blue plaques on the buildings, they reveal quite a captivating time in Kilmore’s history. If you like shopping, pop into one of the boutique stores along the walk – they have something for everyone!
After exploring the town centre, head up to Monument Hill for a dose of nature. Take the kids on one of the walking tracks, and notice the fantastic flora and fauna around you. At the top of the hill climb the historic monument tower for a view over looking Kilmore town. Plenty of activities will keep you busy, until it's time for a late lunch, enjoy one of the country bakeries or fish and chips with the family in the open space of Hudson Park.
As you make your way back to Melbourne with a car full of memories, we look forward to welcoming you back to one of Mitchell's towns soon.
