Itinerary: Out and Active in Nature
Discover Broadford and The Great Victorian Rail Trail
|Duration||Best time to visit|
|2 days||Spring, autumn, winter|
Mixing easy-going walks in our towns with a healthy dose of wilderness and adventure is exactly what Mitchell is about. This itinerary is not for the faint-hearted, with one part tranquility mixed with two parts adrenaline!
If you’re heading up to Mitchell for a weekend of activities, best start early in the morning and get here by 8.30am. As you drive over, enjoy the stunning hills along the way, covered in mist with the treetops just about peeking out of the clouds.
Kick your day off at Mount Piper in Broadford, just an hour out of Melbourne. An almost 2km summit walk might sound easy to the ears but it has been rated as a stiff walk by many a-climbers. Wild, raw and brutally beautiful, this highland adventure is sure to wake you up with its steep climbs and spectacular views. The last leg of this trail is rocky but quite achievable, revealing the summit with a backdrop of the entire township.
As you make your way back down and hunger starts to kick in, start planning your trip into Kilmore. One of our most Instagram-friendly towns, Kilmore is packed with cafes, quaint shops and a relaxing country charm. We recommend checking out the Kilmore Gaol Café, Oddfellows Café and Rose Café.
If you’re planning to stay over, the Fox on The Run Motel in Kilmore makes for the perfect base to explore not just the town, but most of Mitchell. Enjoy an easy evening with strolls along Kilmore’s heritage buildings and parks. If you enjoy a good pub vibe, Mac's Irish Pub in Kilmore is the place to be. However, we suggest retiring early so you can save up all your energies for the next day.
The next day, make a beeline towards Tallarook. The Great Victorian Rail Trail stretches from Tallarook right up to Mansfield in northern Victoria. As Victoria's longest rail trail, this undertaking may seem daunting but gentle curves and lots of opportunities to stop and revive make it quite accessible. Whilst that trail stretches 134kms onto Mansfield, we recommend venturing from Tallarook to Trawool, stop over for a rest and meal at the Trawool Estate and then back to Tallarook, an achievable 26km loop.
Rejuvenate at the end of your trip at the lovely Tallarook Hotel. With delicious farm-to-table fare, here is truly where you’d like to culminate your trip to Mitchell. As you slowly start making your way back home, we wait here and hope to see you soon.
