Population milestone reached

A major population milestone has been reached with 52,225 people now calling Mitchell Shire home. And more milestones are on the horizon as our population continues to grow.

As the fastest growing municipality in Victoria, Mitchell Shire’s rapid growth is expected to see the population count hit 270,000 by 2048. In 2011, an estimated 35,105 residents were living in Mitchell Shire, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Council is proactively working to avoid growing pains by investing in important infrastructure like buildings and playgrounds, footpath links and improved roads – just to name a few.

Council made submissions to the State and Federal budgets with four key asks. These were:

  • the planning for, and construction of, the Beveridge Intermodal Freight Terminal.
  • the construction and improvement of key road infrastructure to support the development of the Northern Growth Corridor.
  • improved public transport, connectivity, accessibility and appropriateness.
  • appropriate, accessible and affordable mental health services for all people within our community.

“Mitchell Shire is growing, and it’s growing fast. More government investment now has the potential to change the face of our shire for generations to come. It is not just about houses, people need access to more mental health facilities, improved services and places to get out and about,” he said.

“Now more than ever, Mitchell Shire needs increased State and Federal Government funding invested into our community. Council understands there are challenges for residents already. With traffic volumes set to double in the next 10 years, Council will continue to push for main road funding on both the Hume Freeway and Northern Highway.

“We welcome strong partnerships across State and Federal governments. By working together, we can make a difference to thousands of people every day. Council is proactively planning our shire’s growth; we want to maintain a liveable community for years to come."

“We welcome the population growth and the opportunities it will bring all residents. Mitchell Shire aims to create and maintain a healthy, connected and sustainable community.”
