Pet expo this Saturday

Pet lovers will get the chance to immerse themselves in the world of animals when the annual Mitchell Shire Pet Expo brings furry, feathered and scaly friends from all the around the region to Hadfield Park, Wallan, on Saturday 16 November from 10am.

This year’s theme is Responsible Pet Ownership – one of Council’s key pillars in the Domestic Animal Plan.

Ensuring your dog and cat is registered is important and provides Council with every opportunity to get them home.

Registration

If your dogs or cats aren’t currently registered, Council is offering registration for the special reduced Pet Expo price of $5. This registration will expire on 10 April 2020. Dogs and cats must be microchipped in Mitchell Shire.

Microchipping

Microchipping will also be available for dog and cat owners. The Northern Veterinary Clinic will be providing this service for the special price of $35.

If your pet is microchipped and you are not sure if your details are up to date Council will have Rangers available to scan and provide the microchip number and instructions on how to update your details.

Other activities

There will be demonstrations from local trainers from Alfoxton Dog Centre and Refine your Canine Dog Training, as well as a display from Mitchell Agility Dogs.

Other free activities include face painting, jumping castle, a petting zoo and more.

The day celebrates the importance of pets in society, the social benefits to family, community and people of all age ranges.

The Mitchell Shire Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-21 covers issues such as animal registrations, cat curfews, dog attacks, de-sexing, pound facilities and dogs on leash.

Recently, Council implemented a cat curfew which means felines must be kept on their properties from sunset to sunrise. It does not mean the cats remain inside, just confined to the owner’s property.

Quotes attributable to Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor Bill Chisholm

“The Pet Expo is a great event and responsible pet ownership is important for all people and their animals,” she said.

“We have one of the fastest growing municipalities in Victoria. As our population grows, so too does the number of pets through our towns. This means we need to all do our bit to keep animals safe and happy.

“It is well-known that pets can improve well-being and bring people together and the Pet Expo is a great way to showcase the many services available in our region for animals and their owners.”
