A Dog Friendly Road Trip Around Mitchell

DurationBest time to visit
1 dayAll-year round

One of the greatest joys of travelling with dogs? They are just so happy you brought them along!

Travelling with pets is on the rise, and lucky for you, we’ve designed a day out with your four-legged friend so that you get the best of both – your time with your pet and the lovely experiences in store at Mitchell!

Secure your furry friend and hit the road. If you’re coming from Melbourne, the best way is to drive up north via Craigieburn on the M31 Hume Freeway. Take the Wallan exit for a pit stop for some lovely food and coffee! Try the bacon and eggs at Pretty Sally Bakehouse that will melt in your mouth and satisfy your heart. Or continue to Kilmore where there is plenty of cafe options including Rose Cafe and the Kilmore Gaol Cafe. Best of all, they have an outdoor dining area that is perfect for the pups.

With a full belly, explore the Kilmore Creek Heritage Art Walk. The area is full of sights to see and art to take in. Remember to keep your dog on leash during your walk. If you wanting a bit of a nature escape, drive over to the Great Victorian Rail Trail in Trawool – about a 35 minute drive from Kilmore.

It’s so easy to spend the entire day at the longest Rail Trail in the state. The trail offers a walking path that is dog friendly, and is surrounded by exceptional scenery. There are picnic tables along the way too if you need to stop for a drink or a bite! This one is not so much big-ticket enticements, but truly an old-time country charm full of summer skies and open hearts!

After the big walk, we know you might be on the hunt for a cold one. Just a short drive away is the Tallarook Hotel, in well… Tallarook! Their open spaces are dog-friendly, and they have bowls put up for your furry ones to rehydrate. If it’s too hot, remember to ask for some ice for your babies to keep their temperatures cool! As for yourself, there is a selection of beer and food waiting for you to relish.

If this is adventure enough for the day, we have ample reasons for you to keep coming back. With off leash dog parks in both Wallan and Kilmore, and great tracks and trails like Taylor’s Creek Pathway in Wallan, The Goulburn River Trail, Monument Hill, and Mount Disappointment which are all dog-friendly and within the Shire!

Come over and Discover Mitchell. Your pets are very welcome here.
