Fire prevention works continue with second round of roadside slashing

Thursday 8 March, 2018

While summer might be over, there is still the potential for hot weather and high fire risk periods.

Mitchell Shire Council has continued its fire prevention works across the Shire, with a second round of roadside slashing completed on some of our higher volume traffic local roads.

The first round of slashing was conducted between November 2017 and January 2018. However, due to increased grass growth, a second cut was completed over the past month.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said Council had so far invested approximately $250,000 on this year’s roadside slashing program and would continue to monitor regrowth to determine if any further slashing was required.

“We live in a high-risk fire area and although summer has officially finished, that doesn’t mean we can be complacent when it comes to fire prevention,” Cr Sanderson said.

“People still need to be vigilant and make sure their homes and properties are fire-ready. Council is doing this as well, and part of our fire prevention measures include undertaking a second roadside slash.

“Reducing fuel loads near our roads is a vital way to help prevent fires starting or spreading, especially from cars which are pulled over on the side of the road.

“We will continue to monitor our roadsides over the coming months and will slash more roadsides if required.”

Council manages a 1383km road network and conducts roadside maintenance including height and width clearance, weed spraying, woody weed removal, township roadside slashing and specific fire prevention roadside slashing and spraying. Roadside spraying works are scheduled for August.

VicRoads is responsible for fire prevention works on VicRoads-managed roads.
