A bumper summer saw the number of people who walked through the gates of Council’s three outdoor pools soar by 46 per cent.
After a warm start to the season, the outdoor pool season was extended in February until the end of Easter.
The season wrapped up last week, with almost 14,000 visits to the pools in Broadford, Tallarook and Seymour, up from 9483 the season before.
As well as a great way to have fun and beat the summer heat, the pools were once again used by schools for swimming and water safety programs and by Council and the Friends of Tallarook Pool for community events and activities.
This season, Council also trialled free lap swimming at the Seymour War Memorial Outdoor Pool, and VICSWIM held its learn to swim program at all three pools for the first time in many years.
There were also once again high numbers of people who attended the Spalsh Park at the Community Bank® Adventure Playground in Wallan.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson heralded the community, Friends of Tallarook Pool and Mitchell Leisure Services staff for making the season such a great success.
“After some cooler weather last season which saw patron numbers down a little, we were really fortunate to have quite a few hot days this season, especially late last year,” Cr Sanderson said.
“The pools were so well used, and the weather was fantastic, so we extended the season in February.
“Unfortunately, temperatures cooled down from there and we were only able to open the pools one weekend after extending the season.
“We also faced some challenges this season, especially when floods saw us have to drain and re-fill the Tallarook pool, and we are incredibly grateful for Tallarook CFA for helping us out when this happened.
“However, on the whole it was a fantastic season and it was great to see so many people in our community get down to their local pool.”
While the outdoor pool season has finished and the water at the Splash Park has been turned off, there are still plenty of options if you fancy taking a dip with the indoor heated pools at Kilmore Leisure Centre and Seymour Sports and Aquatic Centre open for business.
Both centres have 25m indoor pools for swimming lessons, fitness classes and recreational swimming.
