Update on rehabilitation and capping of former Seymour landfill

Friday 4 May, 2018

You may have heard the former Seymour landfill on Hume and Hovell Road is being rehabilitated and capped. But what does that exactly mean?

In line with EPA rules, when a landfill reaches capacity and can no longer be used, it needs to be closed so the land can be rehabilitated.

The former Seymour landfill, commonly known as the tip, is full and has been closed since 2011, with waste taken to the Mitchell Landfill at Hilldene.

Rehabilitation works have been happening at the former Seymour landfill for the past few months.

As part of the next stage of rehabilitation, Council needs to relocate the Resource Recovery Centre, which is co-located at the site and has remained open.

Council is currently in the process of planning an alternative site for the new Seymour Resource Recovery Centre and will engage with the community to get their feedback in June this year.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said Council was working hard to ensure there would be as little impact as possible for residents during these works.

“Capping and rehabilitating the former Seymour landfill is a very big job, and one we are required by law to complete,” Cr Sanderson said.

“At present, the Seymour Resource Recovery Centre remains open during the works at the former Seymour landfill. We’re looking forward to completing these works, and look forward to the finalising the planning for the new Seymour Resource Recovery Centre, which in itself is another major project.

“Council is working hard to make this relocation as smooth as possible and we will keep residents updated and seek their input on the new Resource Recovery Centre site.

“Council understands it’s important Seymour residents have access to a Resource Recovery Centre during this transition and we are working hard to ensure that this is available.”
