A series of youth engagement programs, including cooking classes, street art workshops and mental health sessions, are about to be rolled out by Mitchell Youth Services.

The MYE! Mitchell Youth Engagement program aims to enhance social connection and community participation, as well as improve the health and wellbeing of young people in the shire.

The program has been made possible thanks to $90,000 from the Victorian Government’s Engage! funding.

Programs will begin in March this year at Council’s youth rooms in Broadford and Wallan and will include leadership training, cooking workshops, street art, suicide prevention training and youth mental health workshops.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the programs would build the self-esteem, skills and knowledge of young residents.

“Last year we conducted the Mitchell Youth Survey to get a better understanding of some of the issues our young residents are faced with, and to find out more about the ways in which we could help them develop and connect with their communities,” Cr Sanderson said.

“We’ve taken this feedback on board and have developed a range of engagement programs that will help our young people build the skills they need to overcome hurdles or achieve wonderful things.

“We’d like to sincerely thank the Victorian Government for investing in this program, which will have such a positive impact on our community.”

Mitchell Youth Council Mayor Audrey Flannery said it was a fantastic initiative which would have enormous benefits for young people in the community.

“These programs will be fantastic ways for young people to learn new skills and get the support they need, engage with one another and the community, and make new friends.”

More information on the programs will be available shortly.
