Mitchell Shire Council is encouraging its residents to show their community pride by joining in a local Clean Up Australia Day event on Sunday 4 March.
Clean Up Australia Day helps communities improve their environment by coming together and cleaning up their local street, park, reserve or waterway.
There are also clean up days for businesses on Tuesday 27 February and schools on Friday 2 March.
Mitchell Shire Council has been supporting Clean Up Australia Day since 2001 by providing assistance with litter collection, materials such as extra bags and safety vests, volunteer support and event promotion.
Last year, more than 100 volunteers across the shire collected 145 large bags of waste as well as a trailer load of cans/bottles and a trailer load of scrap metal, tyres and mattresses.
There are 10 sites already registered across Mitchell Shire in Broadford, Clonbinane, Seymour, Wallan and Wandong.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said there were many benefits of participating.
“First and foremost, Clean Up Australia Day is about improving one of our greatest assets - our natural environment,” Cr Sanderson said.
“Unfortunately, not everyone does the right thing and disposes of their waste correctly.
“Clean Up Australia Day is also a great chance for our community to connect, socialise and work together and help build pride in the beautiful natural environment we are so lucky to have in Mitchell.
“I’d like to thank those community groups and committees who have already registered a clean up site and I’d encourage others to jump online and register one too.”
To register a site or to volunteer, visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au or phone 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).
If you are registering a new site, please also contact Mitchell Shire Council on 5734 6200 to ensure that additional support such as the supply of extra clean up bags or assistance with rubbish disposal can be provided by Council.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring a hat, gloves, sunscreen, drinking water and to wear closed-toe shoes.
