Help spread Christmas cheer by donating a present to someone doing it tough

24 November 2017

For most people, Christmas is about spending quality time with friends and family.

But for those who are doing it tough, it can be a time that isn’t always full of festive cheer.

Council is partnering with Wallan and Broadford community group, Love In Action, to help brighten Christmas for some of Mitchell’s most vulnerable people.

Christmas trees will be set up at Council’s Customer and Library Services Centres in Broadford, Kilmore, Seymour and Wallan so people can drop off a present that will be distributed to community members in need.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson encouraged the community to dig deep and help out.

“Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and happiness, but unfortunately for some people in our community this isn’t the case and it can become a time of stress or isolation,” Cr Sanderson said.

“There are a number of people out there in our community who are in need of a helping hand this festive season - they may have no family to celebrate with or may be struggling to make ends meet and can’t afford Christmas presents.

“This initiative is a fantastic way to show kindness and compassion towards a fellow community member who may being going through hard times. A simple gift could really make someone’s Christmas special and put a smile on their face.”

Sue Scrivens from Love In Action Wallan said the group, whose motto is ‘community looking after its own’, aimed to assist local families in need.

“This Christmas we hope to bless over 100 families with Christmas food hampers and presents for parents and children,” she said.

“These families would not be able to celebrate Christmas without the generosity of Love in Action team members, but most of all the amazing community and business contributions.”

Donations can include unwrapped gifts for any age or gender and can be dropped off from 1 December to 20 December.

Second-hand or perishable items cannot be accepted.
