To celebrate the Community Bank® Adventure Playground and Splash Park in Wallan turning one, a special birthday celebration will be held next week.
The festivities will kick off at 11am on Sunday 10 December and will feature a free sausage sizzle, free face painting and cupcakes.
The day will give residents a chance to experience the all-abilities playground and the popular Splash Park, which had its water switched back on earlier than anticipated this season due to a recent hot spell.
The celebration caps off an amazing year for the innovative playground, after it took out the Major Playspace Award at the Parks & Leisure Australia (Victoria/Tasmania) 2017 Regional Awards of Excellence in May.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the playground had made a huge impact on the community.
“The Community Bank® Adventure Playground has been so popular with not only local residents, but people from all over the state,” Cr Sanderson said.
“It has helped attract so many new people and their families to visit the area, which has had some fantastic flow on effects for local businesses and local tourism. It has also had positive impacts on our residents' health and wellbeing.
“We’re really proud of this playground and what it’s brought to our community over the past year. It was also very exciting to see the playground pitted against a range of fantastic facilities to win a major state award earlier this year.
“The playground would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful partners in the Victorian Government and the Wallan and Kilmore Community Bank branches. We’d like to sincerely thank them for helping bring such an amazing facility to our growing community.”
The Community Bank® Adventure Playground and Splash Park opened in December 2016 and was funded by the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, the Wallan and Kilmore Community Bank branches and Mitchell Shire Council.
It features a five-storey tower with three slides, 25m flying fox with an inclusive seat, sensory play spaces, Splash Park complete with an aqua drop bucket, covered BBQ facilities, accessible changerooms and all-inclusive play opportunities.
The playground is free and open all year to children of all ages and abilities, with the Splash Park operating from 10am to 8pm during the warmer months.
Thanks to funding from Regional Development Victoria as part of the Wallan Town Heart revitalisation, Council will also be building 25 new car parks in Bentinck Street in December.
There will be some minor disruption to parking, but the playground will remain in operation.
The birthday celebration runs from 11am-2pm on Sunday 10 December.
