The Community Bank® Adventure Playground in Wallan is the toast of the state after taking out a major award, and will now vie for a national title later this year.
The playground won the prestigious Major Playspace Award at the Parks & Leisure Australia (Victoria/Tasmania) 2017 Regional Awards of Excellence on Tuesday night.
The award celebrates playspaces in Victoria/Tasmania over $500,000 that create a sense of ‘place’ in the community, and exhibit innovative designs that aid childhood development.
Since opening in December last year, the innovative Community Bank® Adventure Playground has been a hive of activity, with people travelling from all parts of the State to play at the all-abilities space.
The playground was funded by the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund ($950,000), the Wallan and Kilmore Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank ($520,000) and Mitchell Shire Council ($520,000).
It features a five-storey tower with three slides, 25m flying fox with an inclusive seat, sensory play spaces, Splash Park complete with an aqua drop bucket, covered BBQ facilities, accessible changerooms and all-inclusive play opportunities.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said Council was extremely proud to win the award.
“The Community Bank® Adventure Playground has been such a magnificent project with so many social and health benefits for our community,” Cr Sanderson said.
“To be recognised with an award like this, against so many other great facilities, is very humbling.
“Council is very proud of this playground. It’s innovative, inclusive, fun and has enhanced the community feel in the town.”
Cr Sanderson the project would not have been possible without the support of some key partners.
“Our sincere thanks must go to the State Government and the Wallan and Kilmore Community Bank branches of the Bendigo Bank for their support and generous financial contributions towards this project,” Cr Sanderson said.
“The playground’s architect, Jeavons Landscape Architects, and builders, Naturform, were instrumental in making the playground the success it is today and Council thanks them immensely for all their hard work.
“I’d also like to thank all the Council staff and community members who were involved in this project.
“The commitment of these partners to help Council improve our community is greatly appreciated.”
Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, said the award was well-deserved.
“Having secured Labor Government funding and sat on the planning and design committee for the Community Bank® Adventure Playground, it’s extremely satisfying to take out such a prestigious award,” Ms Symes said.
“The Wallan community have fallen in love with the Community Bank® Adventure Playground and kids are so proud of their home town, it’s a brilliant collaborative project and I thank everyone involved.”
The Community Bank® Adventure Playground is free and open all year to children of all ages and abilities, with the splash park operating 10am to 8pm during the warmer months.
State award winners will compete for the national award later this year.
