Recruitment software security breach (PageUp)

*Updated 21 June 2018*

If you have applied for a job with Mitchell Shire Council since 1 July 2017, some of your personal data may have been accessed by unauthorised persons following a security incident at PageUp, a third party supplier that provides the software which we use for recruitment.

What happened?

On May 23, 2018, PageUp detected unusual activity on its IT infrastructure and immediately launched a forensic investigation. On May 28, 2018 their investigations revealed some indications that client data may have been compromised. Detailed forensic investigations have since confirmed that an unauthorised person gained access to PageUp systems. PageUp advises that there is no evidence that there is still an active threat, and the jobs website can continue to be used. However, Mitchell Shire Council has temporarily stopped processing applications through PageUp.

What personal information may have been affected?

PageUp advises that the following information provided by applicants may have been affected:

  • Contact details including name, email address, physical address, and telephone number
  • Biographical details including gender, date of birth, and maiden name (if applicable), nationality, and whether the applicant was a local resident at the time of the application
  • Employment details at the time of the application including employment status, company and title.

PageUp also advises that the following data was not affected:

  • resumes
  • financial information
  • Australian tax file numbers
  • employment contracts

What personal information may have been affected?

If a job applicant included your contact details as a referee in their application, then this information may have been affected. PageUp advises that this data may include:

  • any contact information provided by the applicant to us such as name, job title, position, company, email address and telephone number.

Australia’s expert community identity and cyber support service, IDCare, has been working with impacted organisations and members of the community in relation to this incident.

IDCare advises that direct risk of identity theft is unlikely due to the nature of the information that may have been accessed.

However, there are other risks such as phishing emails, telephone scams and specific risks to individuals concerned about their contact information, physical address, and employment details (and applications) becoming known to third parties that people need to consider.

IDCare advises people to:

  • Immediately change passwords that may be the same as the one used during the recruitment process undertaken with impacted organisations.
  • Regularly change passwords and make them hard to guess.
  • Be wary of phishing emails by reviewing the sender of the email and be cautious of links and attachments. If in doubt, make your own enquiries with the organisation and individual concerned using other means.
  • Avoid telephone scammers – good organisations don’t call you and then ask for your details. If in doubt, finish the call and do your own research by finding an alternative contact point and checking to see if the real organisation did call.

Other information

We also recommend viewing the following information from PageUp, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and IDCare, cyber security experts.

We are in the process of contacting people who's details may have have been affected.

While there is no evidence of an active threat, we are taking this matter very seriously and have taken the decision to temporarily stop processing applications through the PageUp system.

We are currently reviewing security information provided by PageUp and are hopeful  working towards returning to the PageUp service shortly.
