The Community Development Team brings together a number of related activities that have a focus on improving the quality of life for the residents of the Mitchell Shire, building community capacity, addressing social disadvantage and facilitating active citizenship. One way we do this is through annual community events. Council understands the importance of bringing community together to ensure people stay connected, engaged and involved in their community. Below is a list of annual community events hosted by the Community Development Team.
If you or your community group/organisation would like to be involved in the planning and delivering of these events please contact the Community Development Team on 5734 6200.

Cultural Diversity Week is held in late March each year and provides an opportunity for Victorians to come together to share aspects of their culture, faith and language, and celebrate the benefits multiculturalism brings to our state.
On 22 March, Mitchell Shire Council came together with partner agencies to host a Family Fiesta in Hadfield Park, Wallan. The event was not only a colourful celebration of cultural music and dancing but also an opportunity to say a big “Welcome” to Mitchell Shire’s new culturally diverse residents.
The Chinese Lion dance started off the festivities, led by students from the Kilmore International School. The program also showcased Indonesian dancing by Wallan Secondary College, Samoan dancing and the Haaka, as well as Indian Bollywood dancing.
There were also a range of outdoor activities which were enjoyed by local families. The sumo wrestling suits from the YMCA activity bus had the local kids laughing and the soccer kicking trials led by Mitchell Rangers Soccer Club included Police radar to record everyone’s scores. There was mask making and craft activities put on by FamilyCare and stencil art put on by Berry Street. The 1st Wallan Wallan Scout Group and Wallan Neighbourhood House provided a free sausage sizzle to starve off everyone’s hunger from all the dancing!
Mitchell Shire Council held a free Community BBQ to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week on Saturday 16 March at Merri Creek Park, Wallara Waters, Wallan. Cultural diversity resources such as ribbons and information were given out to families that attended. As the park was surrounded by new housing and the Shire wanted to reach out to new communities the location was appropriate. A partnership was set up with Nexus Primary Health, FamilyCare, 1st Wallan Wallan Scout Group, Wallan Neighbourhood House and CatholicCare. Activities included free face painting and a Jumping castle. All partners gave out information in relation to their services. The Waste Education Officer from Mitchell Shire also attended and spoke to residents.
