Playgroups, Fun Activities and Child Care

Activities for Children in Mitchell

Playgroup-aged children are going through a stage of rapid brain and skill development.

Playgroup encourages that development which is important preparation for kindergarten and school:

  • babies are offered play experiences to stimulate their senses
  • toddlers practise their developing physical, intellectual and language skills
  • preschool children practise social skills

Playgroup can also be a lifeline to parents with babies, toddlers and preschoolers who might not have any other opportunity to get to know local parents going through similar experiences.

Several playgroups, fun activity sessions, library rhyme time and story time sessions, water awareness programs and toy library operate in Mitchell Shire, download the brochure for your local area below or click on the relevant link.

Mitchell Shire has a range of playgrounds, parks and walking trails.

Playgroup Victoria

Playgroup Victoria has been helping families join, start and run playgroups in Victoria since 1974 over the telephone, through publications and multimedia and, where possible, in person. Playgroups are for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their parents or caregivers.

For playgroups run by Playgroup Victoria in your local area contact Playgroup Victoria, phone 1800 171 882.

Mitchell Shire run free funded supported playgroups throughout the region. They are structured sessions that operate during Victorian school terms by a trained facilitator. Supported playgroups offer families a safe place to play and interact with their children. It is a meeting place for socialising with other families and learning more about community groups that can support your children. Our trained facilitator is there to offer support and strategies through the Smalltalk program offered during each session. Smalltalk strategies enhance everyday parenting opportunities, building positive interactions for improved learning and development in the home environment.

To be eligible to attend supported playgroups, you or a family member must hold a Health Care Card or type of concession card, identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or have children in in kinship care.

For session locations and dates, to check eligibilty and for further information please contact Rachelle Burke on (03) 5734 6253 or 0437 516 471.

Several child care centres operate within Mitchell Shire offering a range of child care options. Council operates a crèche service at our Leisure Centres.

Mitchell leisure services crèche Seymour and Kilmore

Seymour Sports and Aquatic Centre Crèche and Kilmore Leisure Centre Crèche provide all members and casual visitors with an affordable and accessible crèche with qualified educators.

Qualified educators will supervise your child in an interactive and secure environment. The crèches have games, toys and equipment to keep your young ones happy while you exercise. They believe that children have the right to a safe and welcoming environment where they can grow, develop and learn through play. Each child is respected as an individual with unique needs, interests and wants - this is reflected in the daily routines, activities and programs. The educational program is balanced to ensure that children are provided with opportunity to develop to their potential. Children are encouraged to embrace independence, make choices, explore the environment and to extend their creativity with confidence.

The service encourages all children to be included in our program regardless of gender, ability, religious/cultural influences, family make-up, and/or socio-cultural position.
