Kilmore Bypass — Stage 1
The Kilmore Bypass is one of the most urgently needed road and infrastructure projects in Mitchell Shire.
What is needed to make this a reality?
A commitment is required from the State Government for Stage 1 of the Kilmore Bypass.
Stage 1 sets a 4-year goal for the completion of the Public Acquisition Overlay, land purchase for the entire route, and the construction of the roundabout at Wandong Road.
Completion of Stage 1 before the 2026 Victorian Election will ensure that this long overdue project continues to progress, futureproofing this rapidly growing community, and protecting and celebrating one of Victoria’s most historic towns.
What is Kilmore Bypass?
This Bypass on the Northern Highway would see the construction of a road around Kilmore enabling more efficient movement of freight and through traffic. It will ease congestion and support efficient freight movement.
Ultimately, the Bypass will help to revitalise the heart of this town and support substantial amenity and liveability improvements.
Who will benefit from the Bypass and why?
Kilmore’s population is rapidly growing, driven by families seeking a green change.
The Historic Town Centre dating back to 1837 continues to provide a strong anchor for this community and delivers a mix of retail, historic, and community spaces that bring the community together.
The presence of heavy vehicles travelling through the main strip of the town centre, via Sydney Street, continues to raise safety and traffic congestion concerns within the community.
With the Northern Highway’s rapidly increasing freight load coupled with the projected doubling of Kilmore’s population over the next 20 years, this bypass would provide significant benefit to Kilmore, its residents, and visitors to the town by substantially improving local amenity and safety within the town centre, allowing freight to avoid significant delays due to local traffic, and restoring and protecting Kilmore’s historic main street.
Why is this a State Election priority?
The Kilmore Bypass has been under investigation since at least 2008. The State Government settled on a route in 2015, and the Kilmore Structure Plan (2017) established appropriate town planning assuming the existence of the Bypass.
Despite this, there has been insufficient progress towards making this a reality. The community is desperate to see the Bypass built, and is seeking firm commitments to progress this vital project.
