Playgroup-aged children are going through a stage of rapid brain and skill development.
Playgroup encourages that development which is important preparation for kindergarten and school:
- babies are offered play experiences to stimulate their senses
- toddlers practise their developing physical, intellectual and language skills
- preschool children practise social skills
Playgroup can also be a lifeline to parents with babies, toddlers and preschoolers who might not have any other opportunity to get to know local parents going through similar experiences.

Playgroup Victoria
Playgroup Victoria has been helping families join, start and run playgroups in Victoria since 1974 over the telephone, through publications and multimedia and, where possible, in person. Playgroups are for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their parents or caregivers.
They are low cost, are run by the families attending and usually local. 54,000 children from 40,000 families go to playgroup in metropolitan and country Victoria each week.

Mitchell Shire Council ceased the operation of Mitchell Family Day Care (MFDC) from Friday 23 September 2011.
Educators who were previously registered with MFDC are now providing care with alternative Family Day Care schemes operating within our region.
