The Department of Education and Early Childhood Education provides funding for children to attend kindergarten for one year in the year before they start school.
Kindergarten supports the development of appropriate social skills needed for the participation in small groups and in the wider community - necessary for the smooth transition into school. For many children, their kindergarten experience is often their first interaction with people other than family and friends. It is a time when they develop their perception of themselves and their world.
The programs offered by Mitchell Shire Kindergartens aim to enhance this learning by providing opportunities for social interaction, creative activities and physical development. All centres are licensed with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and are governed by State and Federal legislation.
Suitably qualified Early Childhood Teachers and Assistants are employed with a wide range of tertiary qualifications and training, ensuring a stimulating and positive learning environment while attending kindergarten.
When can my child go to Kindergarten?
Children must be four years of age on or before 30 April in the year they attend kindergarten.
Each child develops at their own rate and although your child's age may make them eligible to start kindergarten, other factors may impact on their readiness. It is important that children start school when they are ready to learn in a more formal environment and to make the decision about which year your child will have a funded year of kindergarten.
If your child is born early in the year you might be considering which year to send your child to kindergarten. You may find it beneficial to discuss your child's readiness for kindergarten with Early Childhood Professionals in your local area:
-
Local Kindergarten Teacher
-
Maternal and Child Health Nurse
-
Children's Services Staff within Council
If you would like further information please contact the Early Childhood Teacher at your kindergarten or the Children's Services Coordinator on 5734 6200.
