| Draft Positive Ageing Strategy released for comment | | Mitchell Shire Council is adopting a positive ageing approach to ensure it meets the needs of an ageing population, with the release of the draft Positive Ageing Strategy for community feedback.
Mitchell Shire Mayor, Councillor Bill Melbourne said that at the heart of the strategy is one simple question that has been guiding the strategy’s development. “Why stay in Mitchell Shire after 55 years of age? In answering this question and through community consultation, Council has been able to identify both the principles that the Positive Ageing Strategy aims to adopt, and the services that Council aims to bolster and support”.
The draft was prepared under the guidance of the shire’s Access and Inclusion Committee and is now released for public comment to allow feedback to be provided by interested persons.
The Positive Ageing Strategy was developed following an extensive community consultation process. 128 survey responses were received from the over 55 community, and consultation forums were held in Seymour and Wallan to allow community feedback and suggestions on the survey results.
The draft Positive Ageing Strategy is on display for a period of 28 days and can be viewed at each of the libraries / customer service centres located in Seymour, Kilmore, Broadford and Wallan. The draft is also available on Council’s website www.mitchellshire.vic.gov.au Written submissions must be received by Mitchell Shire Council no later than 4pm Monday 2 November 2009.
Commenting on the draft Positive Ageing Strategy, Mayor Melbourne assured, “Council will endeavour to ensure that older people are able to participate fully in all aspects of community life. They will be given equal access and an opportunity to contribute, providing the respect and dignity that older persons deserve.”
